Full Circle: Manchester Events Brand Returns to its Roots for Ten-Year Celebration
Back in September 2006, when Tony Blair was Prime Minister and smartphones
were still the stuff of sci-fi dreams, in a pub in south Manchester, Social Circle
was born.
Since then, Didsbury-based events brand Social Circle has grown every year to
become the UK's largest social and adventure network, dedicated to providing
free events for its members.
To celebrate Social Circle's double-figure milestone, the group will come full circle,
returning to the venue that saw its inaugural event. The Slug and Lettuce in
Didsbury will host the party on 30th September 2016, from 7.30pm onwards.
The group's founder Steve Sutherland started Social Circle almost by accident,
when he settled in Manchester following his epic five year voyage around the
world.
“I just wanted to meet some new people in an informal, fun environment,” said
Steve. “While there were plenty of online dating sites, nobody was offering a
way to meet like-minded people with the sole purpose of making new friends.”
So he arranged a small social gathering in the function room of The Slug and
Lettuce in Didsbury.
To his surprise, he found that there were a lot of people who wanted the same.
“That first night was crazy,” Steve said. “The venue was only supposed to hold
70 people, but we had at least double that turn up for the event!”
Having discovered a huge gap in the market, Steve began to arrange an
increasing number of events throughout Manchester and beyond.
“The business effectively started out as a blank canvas and I just improvised,”
said Steve, reflecting on Social Circle's early days.
Now the business continues to break records. With 500 members and growing,
over the past decade Social Circle has helped over 2000 people make new
friends... and sometimes more: Following introductions made in the group,
Social Circle has played a direct role in producing marriages, children and even
business partnerships.
Following the success of its social offering, Social Circle also offers corporate
membership for businesses who want to provide their employees added health
and well-being benefits.
And after a decade in the city, how is the well-travelled Scotsman enjoying
Manchester life?
“There's nowhere in the world quite like it,” said Steve. “Believe me, I've
looked.”
