A taste of North India in Essex

The Tandoor at the Chambers restaurant is bringing the undiscovered flavours of North India to Buckhurst Hill, Essex.

The high-end eatery combines a culinary adventure and some classy cocktails with an informal atmosphere, in the area’s Queens Road.

Owners Vip and Manisha Bagga said: “We have four Michelin-starred chefs working with us, so we have invested a great deal in the quality of our food. We like to focus on produce that’s locally sourced, and high-quality cuts of meat, as well as, of course, tandoor cooking. The restaurant has also perfected the art of the 24-hour marinade.

“We offer some of the very best cuisine from this exciting and perhaps lesser known region of India.”

Traditionally, food from northern India includes regions such as Punjab and Kashmir, and there are often strong influences from Central Asia as well. While southern Indian food often features lentils and stews, alongside tamarind and sambar powder, in the north there is a focus on breads and curries. The main spice mixture is garam masala, and dried mango powder is frequently used to give curries their predominantly sour flavour.

With gluten-free, dairy-free and vegetarian diets all catered for, the menu incorporates a range of tikka and tandoor dishes alongside other curries. There’s also a hearty range of appetisers and a choice of traditional deserts from the region.

Tandoor at the Chambers also offers a takeaway service, and is open for dinner from Tuesday to Saturday. There are two sittings on weekend evenings, giving customers the choice to eat from 6pm if they wish. On Sundays, the restaurant is open from noon until 10pm.
