Lloyd v Google supreme court hearing

Rob Masson, CEO, The DPO Centre is available for comment on the Lloyd v Google outcome following the two-day hearing before the Supreme Court last week.

The basis of Mr Lloyd's claim is the assertion that Google secretly tracked the internet activity of millions of Apple iPhone users for commercial purposes between 9 August 2011 and 15 February 2012.

Rob Masson said, “If Lloyd wins this case, it will signal a momentous shift in the way organisations have to protect customer data. Every organisation has a stake in this outcome and it may result in the start of group legal class actions around data issues as a huge threat area for organisations.

“The result of the Lloyd v Google case will have far reaching implications both for the availability of damages for the loss of control of personal data, and for the viability of 'opt-out' style group litigations. For any organisation the stakes in respect of a personal data breach have now risen considerably.”

Notes

The outcome is yet to be publicised. Rob Masson will be available for interviews once the verdict has been made public
