Yorkshire Football Club Shoots for More Than Just Goals!

In providing food and essentials for local families, Pontefract Collieries Football Club proves that the concept of the community Football Club, is still alive and thriving.

Following on from their mantra of ‘Football for all’, Pontefract Collieries Football Club have successfully created the Pontefract Food Hub. With initial funding from the National Lottery Community Fund, the Pontefract Food Hub has been supported the Knottingly Morrisons Community and local volunteers, including club players, coaches and management. Since its formation in September, the Pontefract Food Hub has been delivering food and essential items to people in West Yorkshire, who have been the most affected by Coronavirus Pandemic. More than just a Football Club, Pontefract Collieries FC are proving they’re a genuine force for good in their local community and beyond.

The Coronavirus pandemic has had devastating affects on many people, perhaps none more so than those already vulnerable, those who have lost their jobs and the increasing number of people who are dealing with the longterm health conditions associated with Covid-19 virus. Pontefract Collieries Football Club has been a pillar of the community since its formation in 1958 and has worked with the community to maintain its position and strengthen local relationships. The club has developed numerous innovative grassroots campaigns over the years, including their recent 'boot exchange' which gives club players and amateur sports players the option to trade in their boots at no cost. The Pontefract Food Hub has been launched at a time where the need for community support has never been higher.

PCFC Vice Chairman, Tom Wiles said: ‘’This year has been one of the toughest yet for many people. One of our primary goals has always been to bring the local community together and to raise the standards of equality in the local area, and if the Food Hub can make people’s lives even a little bit easier, then we are determined to make it a success. The response from our community has been overwhelming and we are so, incredibly grateful for all the support we’ve received so far''.

Since being featured on ITV Calendar News last month, the Pontefract Food Hub has seen an increase in donations which has enabled them to help more people and families across the region and they’re not looking to stop anytime soon. Although the national lockdown is coming to an end, the landscape is still uncertain for many. In additions to donations, the Pontefract Food Hub are looking to hear form families and individuals who are struggling and in need of food and essential items.
