School’s out for summer – the importance of switching off!

After a difficult and disruptive year for students of all ages, global tutoring company Tutor Doctor understand the importance of children taking a break from their schoolwork over the summer holidays. Education Experience Specialist, Becky Ward, explains why the summer break provides a brilliant opportunity for children to spend precious time with their family, go on fun days out and explore the outdoors and nature.

“At Tutor Doctor, we want to shout about how children must switch off over the summer holidays and the benefits that this can bring. Many children will feel pressured to catch up academically due to the impact of the pandemic, but we believe it’s important for children to regain confidence in all other areas of their lives too. There are plenty of ways children can keep their minds active and learn new things outside of the classroom environment,” said Becky.

These fun activities that will stimulate learning and help children in a fun, yet informal way:

1. Baking – baking is a lesson in measurement and fractions, and you’ll get to eat your learning!

2. Make a kaleidoscope – this is an ideal activity for a rainy day, or if you just want to do something different with your children, especially if they enjoy arts and crafts.

3. Plant flowers or vegetables – you could use the summer to teach your kids how to plant flowers or vegetables in a pot or flower bed. They can water it every day and watch it bloom!

4. Go bird watching – spark their interest in nature and birds by laying out some seeds in the garden or park and getting out binoculars.

5. Create a summer scrapbook – create your own scrapbook of the amazing things you experience throughout the summer. Decorate and design your scrapbook filled with memories.

Understanding the way individual students learn and adapting educational techniques to coincide with their needs is extremely important. Whether your child is a teenager trying to get their maths skills to the next level or a young child working on their reading skills, this summer should also include time to unwind.

One of the best things parents can do over the long-awaited summer holidays is not to place pressure on catching up academically say the experts at Tutor Doctor. Not only will taking time off lead to improved physical health, mental health and greater wellbeing, it will also lead to increased mental motivation when children are back in the classroom come September.
