UNESCO World Teacher’s Day: finally getting teachers the recognition they deserve
It goes without saying that teaching is one of the most challenging professions. And this has only been made clearer since the world has been introduced to online classrooms and learning in the wake of the pandemic. During which, teachers have been presented with the near-impossible task of keeping kids engaged, entertained and educated through a computer screen.
Teachers’ resilience, quick thinking, flexibility and passion for what they do has reminded us just how much they contribute to the wellbeing and development of children. But the effort teachers make isn’t defined by situations like COVID-19, as the profession is constantly evolving and ultimately placing additional responsibilities and expectations on them. On 5th October, UNESCO World Teacher’s Day is the perfect opportunity to celebrate the ongoing efforts of teachers around the world.
In a time so heavily focused on the wellbeing of children and students as they catch-up on lost learning, it can be easy to forget that teachers should also be involved in the conversation. The late nights, the endless cycle of planning and marking work is enough of an emotional rollercoaster even in the best of times. But as students play catch-up, the additional responsibilities placed on teachers have increased massively.
Whether it’s writing a short letter, gifting them a small treat, or giving them a shout-out, demonstrating your gratitude for teachers and their efforts can go a long way. Sometimes simple ideas are the best. Getting kids to think about all of the great times that they’ve had in school can be inspiring for them. Teachers don’t do what they do for the personal accolades, but to see kids going through education with shared amazing memories is reward enough.
Of course, it doesn’t need to be extravagant, or a costly investment, but showing teachers that you’re prepared to go the extra mile for them can be a nice reminder why they go the extra mile on a daily basis.
