Former family caregiver launches care company with a difference

Vincent Tan had first-hand experience of the difficulties caregivers face on a daily basis when he became his dad’s full-time carer. He also understands the significant impact sector-wide issues currently have on the delivery of care as social care waiting lists rise by 37% in 6 months*. So, Vincent has set his sights firmly on bringing about real change in the quality of social care provision in the communities of South East London with the launch of his new in-home care business, Visiting Angels.

“There are so many local care providers that only have the resources to ‘keep the lights on’ for clients by doing the bare minimum, but we do things differently to help clients thrive and become independent. Staff shortages, a lack of time to complete care visits and poor pay for caregivers is all too common and completely unacceptable. We’re addressing that with above living wage pay, annual inflationary increases, wellbeing support and development opportunities for all staff. The result – caregivers having the time and skills to form real relationships with those in need, creating a hugely beneficial impact on our clients’ quality of life,” said Vincent.

Visiting Angels’ ‘carer-centric’ approach sets it apart from other companies in the domiciliary care sector. Carers working for Visiting Angels feel valued and respected for their commitment to the profession. Through both financial rewards, opportunities for career development and wellbeing considered a priority, Vincent is determined to address existing issues surrounding the industry, which often leaves carers feeling undervalued and underappreciated. These are just a few of the changes Visiting Angels is making that sets them apart from other care providers in the region.

“I have a personal passion for looking after the elderly,” explained Vincent. “But I’ve also had a real insight into the standard of local care provision and the difficulties that have arisen for caregivers due to limited resources and funding. Now we hope to be the go-to employer for local care professionals and invite those who have previously been deterred from working in care to develop their career with us,” added Vincent.

About Visiting Angels

In 2017, the Visiting Angels brand came to the UK under the expert leadership of Dan Archer. A franchise veteran and passionate ambassador for quality care at home, Dan launched the first UK office in October 2017. In less than 12 months, Visiting Angels Sheffield proved to be one of our most successful new franchises. Ever. Dan and his team were awarded ‘Best International Office’ at our 2018 Annual Conference in recognition of their exceptional performance and commitment to the Visiting Angels UK mission. Most care businesses, and in turn, most care franchises, will tell you that they put their clients first. And whilst we don’t disagree with the sentiment, we take a slightly different view on how to achieve it. We believe that to truly be successful in this pursuit, and to change the future of social care in the UK, we must actually put our carers at the heart of the business. For without them, there is no business. We describe this approach as "carer-centric".
