Pioneering consumer app to help households save energy this winter

- Innovative, easy to use app gives households more control over their energy usage and the opportunity to support National Grid’s demand flexibility events

- equiwatt energy savings are rewarded with points that can be redeemed against purchases on major brands including John Lewis and Amazon

- By acting together householders can help energy companies manage energy consumption at peak times and reduce the risk of blackouts

Gateshead, UK, October 31, 2022 – Energy management company, equiwatt, has today announced how its pioneering app will help householders reduce peak time energy consumption this winter.

The equiwatt app, which is free and easy-to-use, links to smart technologies used in homes across the UK - like smart meters, smart plugs and smart EV chargers - to make it easy for householders to shift energy usage away from peak times of demand and reduce the likelihood of blackouts caused by strain on the grid.

Householders using the app linked to smart meters will also be able to support the National Grid demand flexibility trials this winter and benefit from the promised £3KwH incentive via their energy provider as well as continuing to earn points and rewards with equiwatt.

equiwatt’s app sends notifications to householders to take part in energy saving events at peak times by turning off or avoiding the use of appliances – anything from fridge freezers to washing machines – and electric vehicle (EV) charging. Participation can even be automated by connecting the app with smart plugs and smart EV chargers and energy savings are tracked by connecting with a smart meter.

“The equiwatt app couldn’t come at a better time when people are seeking ways to reduce their energy consumption and juggle the rising cost of living,” said Johnson Fernandes, CEO of equiwatt. “The more people come together to reduce energy demand at peak times, the greater impact we will have on reducing strain on the electricity grid and avoiding disruption to our energy supply this winter. Better still, householders can do their bit to help reach the UK’s Net Zero targets”.

equiwatt energy saving events last for up to 1 hour and users are rewarded for the energy and CO2 savings they make with points that can be redeemed for vouchers on Amazon, John Lewis and other big brands, Not only does this help with the rising cost of living but also enables households to reduce their carbon footprint as energy suppliers often resort to using polluting fossil fuel-based energy at these times to meet demand.

“We recommend equiwatt to all our friends and family especially those who already have smart plugs. It’s a straightforward set-up on the app with super helpful customer service if needed and you get rewarded for doing nothing apart from acknowledging the appliances will be off for an hour,” said Giles Matthews-Pipe, equiwatt customer. “While energy prices are rocketing it's something we can do to help cut our bills as well as make a small contribution to help tackle the climate emergency. But small individual actions add up if we all do them.”

As more and more households sign up to use the equiwatt app and participate in peak time energy saving events, the collective impact of the community will grow.

“All of us need to do our part to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels”, said Richard Tubb, equiwatt customer. “equiwatt enables households to use easy-to-use smart technology to reduce their load on the National Grid, save money, and earn rewards while doing so.!”

Further customer quotes;

“Such a good app as it helps me save and monitor energy. It also gives me a chance to earn points to spend on what I want.” - Nick Clark

“The app and concept behind it are genius. My appliances are earning me a little bit of money and I am helping the environment by doing literally nothing, once it is set up.” - Rob Hunter

“Not only does it save money on my bill, but I also get rewarded for doing so.” - Dan Mason

“Energy bills are going up and up and up, but our energy usage was reduced compared to last year and I really think that’s greatly because of using equiwatt. We started paying more attention to what energy we were using during equivents and beyond. We actually saved money on our energy bills even though the cost of each energy unit had gone up.”- Rachael Hunter
