Is this the solution to the lack of STEM female leaders?

David Graham, CEO and Co-Founder of kids coding specialist, Code Ninjas, is offering his expert insight for a thought-leadership piece – a potential solution to the lack of female STEM leaders.

Only 5% of leadership roles within the tech sector are held by women and, across the board, women are outnumbered 4:1. We have just observed International Women’s Day – a date completely dedicated to the celebration of women’s achievements and attributes, specifically in the workplace. But how do we encourage women, specifically, to enter the digital technology workplace?

David believes the problem comes from fewer girls being exposed to tech at a young age in a fun environment. Often, their only exposure to the industry is passive consumption of content, or during lessons in later school life. “Fun,” says David, “is the key.”

The problem;

• Girls and young women are quick to disregard STEM subjects once the time comes for them to opt in at GCSE age

• The lack of female leaders in STEM isn’t due to a shortage of skilled females, but a miseducation around career opportunities in the sector

• Gone are the days that apprenticeships in hairdressing or childcare were the top options for school leavers. In today’s technology-fuelled age, digital literacy is crucial.

The solution?

Exposing girls to STEM and coding education early on in their development will see them stand out from the crowd once the time comes for CV writing and job applications. Studies have shown that women possess a whole host of valuable and often gender-specific skills that are largely missing in today’s digital workforce. By encouraging girls to engage with their love of tech, early on, we could potentially transform the STEM sector for years to come.

David is keen to share his thoughts about how this commitment to nurturing the next generation of female leaders in STEM could make a real change for the future. If this thought-leadership piece would be of interest, please get in touch.
