Local girl guides take part in special coding session in High Wycombe dojo

On Monday 28th November, local girl guides gathered at Code Ninjas High Wycombe at Bucks New University to participate in a special evening of STEM and coding activities that aim to educate local children with the skills needed in our ever-changing technological world. The franchise is run by two best friends, Robin Theakston and Charlie Gunn, and the pair were excited to welcome the Stokenchurch Guides to experience their fun, safe and inclusive learning environment.

“It was fantastic to see the Stokenchurch Guides come along to our dojo,” explained Charlie. “We have always strived for our studio to be a friendly and inclusive environment for all, so introducing the girl guides to coding activities they’ve never tried before was really rewarding. Our mission at Code Ninjas is to spark a curiosity for coding and technology that will encourage boys and girls across Buckinghamshire to learn the technological skills they will need in the future.”

Amongst the excited guides in attendance was Deputy Mayor of High Wycombe, Cllr Nabeela Rana, who echoed Charlie’s sentiment on why the coding education in the area is so important.

“It has been inspiring to see so many local young people getting involved and having so much fun during the session,” said Nabeela. “It’s clear that coding is the future, and Code Ninjas is leading the way in providing a fun environment for kids to learn about computers at such a young age and build the vital foundations for future success for the children of High Wycombe.”

Robin and Charlie are committed to delivering a quality and engaging curriculum to children across the county. And so far, local kids have been enjoying the experience they were promised, which did not go unnoticed by girl guides leader, Janet Smith.

“It’s been a pleasure to bring the Stokenchurch Guides to experience the dojo and see our girls have such a great time! We are always looking for new and exciting things to do in High Wycombe, and Robin, Charlie and the rest of the team at Code Ninjas certainly didn’t disappoint,” explained Janet.

During the session, the girl guides turned ninjas – the name Code Ninjas give to their students – took part in Microsoft MakeCode game building, LEGO Robotics and Snap Circuits.

“Today was my first time coming to Code Ninjas, and I loved it,” said one of the girl guides who attended the session. “My favourite part was completing a circuit using Snap Circuits because we got to work as a team and take part in something I thought I’d never be able to do. Everyone is so friendly here, and I can't wait to come back!”

“By having the Stokenchurch Guides participate in these activities, we wanted to show girls that the world of coding is for everyone,” explained Robin. “Everything about our curriculum is inclusive and built around fun, which keeps kids coming back. Children get immediate help and encouragement from a Code Sensei and fellow ninjas on the nine-belt programme as they advance from white to black belt. Younger kids can take part in Code Ninjas JR, so kids aged 5–14 can access the problem-solving and critical thinking skills they will need to be the leaders of the future."

“We are now looking forward to our festive party in December when we will invite our ninjas to celebrate their achievements over the past few months while taking part in exciting holiday-themed STEM activities just in time for Christmas!”
