The new narrative power of attire

The Pose actor Billy Porter was interviewed for The Sunday Times Style Magazine recently(1). He has become well-known for his unique style, and expressive event outfit choices. In the feature, Billy says “People judge you first by what you look like, and I think that’s very powerful” “...when I manipulate what that first image is, I control the narrative.”

Our clothing selections are sometimes overlooked by the general public as a method of communication. Personal stylists have been helping their clients to give the ‘right impression’ for decades, and now their focus is shifting towards a more psychological approach. Personal stylist and colour consultant Rebecca Ffrancon wrote in her blog post What Colour Combinations You Choose Say About You(2), “I think it’s fine to want to blend into the background on the odd occasion, but I would urge you not to make a habit of this.” She argues that bolder colours give us confidence. Elder fashionista Iris Apfel took the concept one step further when she said “When you don’t dress like everybody else, you don’t have to think like everybody else”.

Atiti Izogie, the brains behind Made to Order Luxury Affair(3) and owner of made to order brand Eyato London(4) has her own take on clothing as communication. She argues that “We remind ourselves of our own narrative, and encourage others to ask about our stories through what we wear.” “By commissioning artisans to create made to order pieces for us, we become part of the story of our clothing.” “We have so much to say about what we wear, from how the creator developed their passion and skills, to why we made certain decisions about how our made to order item looks, feels and functions.”

Perhaps it is time for us all to tell our stories by choosing more daring or personal pieces. Unlike Billy Porter at the Met Gala, we can’t all be carried on a litter by six topless men. However, you could think of Billy’s outfits as inspiration to try something a little bolder in your attire today. Telling your story in this way could trigger some very interesting conversations between you and who knows who?
