Pub prepares to serve up festive whopper

A CHRISTMAS dinner with a belly-busting meaty twist has been launched by a family-owned pub chain.

Turkey will all the trimmings will be served as usual at The Commodore in Grange-over-Sands, Cumbria, this year.

But diners have the special option of ordering it atop a whopping two-pound pig in blanket which will be entombed in a huge Yorkshire pudding.

The Christmas delight will be by strict pre-order only, due to the cooking and preparation time required and because the star attraction will be homemade.

Charlotte Hargan, general manager of The Commodore, which is run by family-owned business, Lakeland Inns, said: “Move over turkey - for many people over the Christmas period, it’s all about the pigs in blankets. They are a festive treat to behold and a perennial favourite here at The Commodore.

“So this year we have taken this festive classic and supercharged it. Our chef has created the most amazing - and meaty - pig in blanket, floated it in an enormous Yorkshire pudding and used it as a base for turkey with every trimming you could wish for.

“It is a Christmas lunch for those with the appetite of a lion - and will certainly take some beating.”

Christmas at The Commodore is traditionally a busy time, as local residents and visitors to the area take advantage of its cosy interior, hearty pub food and unrivalled views.

This year, in addition to the super-charged Christmas lunch, the pub will for the first time be serving ales from its recently acquired sister brewery, Stringers.

A selection of beers, including the brewery’s hugely popular gluten-free range will be on the pumps, ensuring there’s an excellent, locally brewed pint at the end of a wintry walk.

Charlotte said: “Christmas is a wonderful time of the year and the atmosphere at The Commodore is always very special.

“I’m not sure there’s anyone out there who is going to be able to beat our belly buster - but I’m sure there are plenty who will give it a go.”

Christmas lunch is £14.99 and the festive pig in blanket special is £29.99. For diners who simply want to devour the pig in blanket or share it with pals, it can be ordered separately for £16.99.

Christmas lunches are served at The Commodore from December 6, from noon-2.30pm and 5.30pm- 8.30pm Monday to Friday, and at weekends from noon-8.30pm.
