York hosts Twitter Art Exhibit 2022 in support of the Encephalitis Society

Artwork by 900 artists from around the world will be on show – and for sale - at the 12th annual Twitter Art Exhibit in York on Sunday, 26th June.

The exhibition, which takes place at the Hiscox Building, will see the postcard-sized artwork sold off in support of the Encephalitis Society, the Malton-based global charity which supports people affected by the devastating neurological condition.

Artwork has been submitted from many different countries as well as from the York area with contributions from local artists, school pupils and organisations.

Members of the public, aged 16 and older, are invited to attend free of charge on Sunday, 26th June, from 10am to 4pm, to view and purchase artwork, all of which is available for £30.

This is also the perfect opportunity to view the impressive art collection that is housed within The Hiscox Building. Guests can book a 90-minute guided tour of the private art collection, which includes pieces by famed Yorkshire artists such as David Hockney, Harland Miller, and Henry Moore. These tours are taking place at 10.30am, 1pm and 3.30pm, and tickets are priced at £15.00, with all profits being donated to the Encephalitis Society.

From Monday, 27th June, the remaining pieces from the exhibit will be available to purchase online at https://www.twitterartexhibit.org/

Launched in 2010, the Twitter Art Exhibit asks established and up-and-coming artists from around the globe to create a one-off piece of work which is then exhibited at a selected venue and online with members of the public then invited to purchase any of the artwork that catches their eye.

The Encephalitis Society was nominated to be the beneficiary of the 2022 event by the charity’s ambassador and actor, Mathew Bose. Mathew, who is known to many from his roles in Emmerdale and It’s a Sin, explained:

“I have been involved with the Twitter Art Exhibit for several years now as an artist and there is always a lot of love for this wonderful event.

“Artists love it as they can use their skills to support a worthy cause, members of the public love it as they can pick up some very good artwork at a reasonable price, and the beneficiary charities love it as they can raise awareness and funds for their causes.

“As curator of this year’s Twitter Art Exhibit, I have personally seen every piece of art that has been submitted and I have to say, the standard of art is phenomenal and covers all different styles.

“We also have artwork from as far afield as the USA, India, and Nepal, as well as much closer to home, thanks to submissions from pupils at The Mount School, The Blueberry Academy, and well-known artists from York.

“I’m very grateful and humbled that the team organising Twitter Art Exhibit has chosen to support a charity which is so close to my heart and to stage it in my home city is also something I am very excited about. All that we need now is a good turnout from the people of York!”

Cat Salter-Smith, board member of Twitter Art Exhibit, said: “It has been fascinating to find out more about the work of the Encephalitis Society and to realise the importance of creating art in helping people in their recoveries from an acquired brain injury.”

“Yet again, it goes to show the amazing power that creativity has on the brain and how important it is to all our mental health. We really hope that local artists will join the hundreds of others who have happily donated artwork to our exhibitions over the years and show that ‘Through Art, We Can Change the World’.”
