Romanian chimney cakes make Oana’s a Cambridgeshire hot spot
St Ives-based coffee shop Oana’s has carved out a reputation for its signature chimney cakes, which have been winning praise across Cambridgeshire and on social media.
Chimney cakes are a popular Romanian street food, and can be enjoyed alone, or as an accompaniment to tea, hot chocolate or coffee.
Made from sweet yeast dough and shaped to resemble a chimney, these sweet treats are vegan but can be decorated with sugar, nuts, cream or even multi-coloured sprinkles. Each chimney cake is made by hand using a traditional Romanian recipe, while the accompaniments vary depending on the season.
Oana’s recently introduced a Valentine’s Day version of the cake. For a limited time only, visitors were able to indulge in a strawberry sugar chimney cone, served with strawberries, chocolate and Kelly’s strawberry ice cream.
“We have been blown away by the response to our chimney cakes,” said Dean Castel, owner of Oana’s. “They have quickly become a favourite with our regular customers, and we have noticed a rise in new visitors who have travelled from a bit further away just to try our cakes.
“Our chimney cakes are unique in the area, and they were created by Oana Castel, who grew up in Romania, where chimney cakes are a popular street food.
“We are delighted that the coffee-lovers of Cambridgeshire love these Transylvanian delicacies just as much as we do and are excited to introduce new flavour combinations soon.”
Oana's was founded by husband and wife team Dean and Oana Castel in 2016. The cafe specialises in freshly baked pastries, thick shakes, indulgent hot chocolates, Illy coffees, and innovative cakes.
Oana Castel also draws on her Romanian heritage to create a rolling menu of traditional Eastern European fare, including her famous meatball soup.
