There’s no better time to get a kitten than on International Cat Day, but have you got all the kit?

It’s International Cat Day on Monday - what better excuse to bring a new furry friend into the family! “Like any young pet, kittens require extra care and attention while they settle into a household” says Alex Bennett, Head of Marketing at specialist pet insurer petGuard. “Thinking about how you’re going to equip your home and the products you’ll need to keep your kitten happy and healthy will make the first few months that much more enjoyable” Bennet adds. If you’re thinking about buying a kitten, there are a few points to consider first.

Choose the right breed for you

It’s important to consider the breed of kitten you’d like as temperaments and their individual likelihood of triggering allergies will vary. Some of the most popular cat breeds are Bengals, exotic shorthairs and Persians.

What to feed your kitten

As you’ll find out soon enough, your kitten will grow very quickly and it’s important to provide them with as much dry or wet cat food as they want for the first one to two months to fuel all their running and curtain tearing! After this period, you’ll want to begin setting meal times so a routine can be established.

Flea treatments

There are many types of flea treatment products such as powders and sprays, but it’s very important that you treat your kitten monthly. Regular scratching is a good sign that your kitten has some unwanted tenants.

Cat flap

With a good choice of different cat flaps on the market, it’s worth doing the research into the kind and price point that you’re looking for. It’s important to account for growth when you install your cat flap, as if not, it may become increasingly awkward for your kitten to use as it reaches its adult size.

Cat accessories

There’s a huge range of accessories you can buy to keep your kitten entertained. Scratching posts, cat toys and cat beds and some examples of tried and tested products which can help your kitten settle into its new home.

Keeping your kitten safe

Make sure to register your kitten at your local vet. Once you’ve registered, you should take your furry child for its first check up and ask for any advice if needed.

Finally, you should consider insurance to make sure you’re covered if your kitten needs any type of treatment. “Kittens are extremely curious and won’t have mastered balance and awareness in their early months”, adds Bennett. “That’s why it’s important to research your insurance options to keep them protected as they explore their new world”.
