Play and Learn Café urges parents to mark National Play Day

The Play and Learn Cafe is urging parents across the country to mark National Play Day, the UK’s annual salute to a child's right to play, this Wednesday 1st August.

Gail Johnson, co-director of Play and Learn Café, said: “As an organisation that aims to put children’s personal growth and wellbeing at the heart of our agenda, we’re calling on parents across the country to mark the day in whatever way they can and, if they can, by spending some extra time with their children.”

As a welcoming and inclusive organisation dedicated to supporting childhood development, the Play and Learn Cafe champions the benefits of play, an activity vital to a child's healthy cognitive development, physical fitness and ability to build social relationships. In this way, the cafe's aims are very much in line with the ethos of National Play Day.

As the organisers of National Play Day are keen to point out, play is vital to a child’s development, particularly in the first five years of life when they are absorbing lots of information about the world around them.

Indeed, research into play has frequently demonstrated that it improves the health and quality of life of both families and children, helping to increase a child’s self-awareness and self-esteem, promoting their creativity, improving their cognitive and physical health, providing the opportunity for them to mix with other children, and building resilience through risk-taking and problem-solving.

Another fantastic element of playtime is that it allows children to interact with a variety of other children of different backgrounds, ages and abilities, opening them up to differences in the world and helping them to become more tolerant, broad-minded adults.

“Giving children the best possible start in life is a wonderful way to let them thrive as adults, and play can help achieve this,” added Gail.
