Local gardening firm makes switch to electrical tools to help the environment

Essex firm Family Tree Gardens is making the switch to electrical gardening tools in a bid to be more environmentally friendly, and is encouraging other gardeners to do the same.

Ex-lawyer Thomas Nolan, who has run the Stock-based enterprise with his brother James for the past two years, says: “Many gardening maintenance tools give off high-pollution emissions. Cordless electric tools can really help to reduce overall levels of pollution. Many are ‘smart’ so that you only use the power you need.

“We think our move to electric power tools is a very positive one, and we hope others will consider doing the same thing.

“Using electric tools doesn’t completely eliminate pollution, but they are so much better for the planet, and what’s more, there are no fuel spillages. The newer electric cordless tools are easier to use than their fuel-based counterparts. They’re also quieter.”

Of particular concern are volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, which are potentially harmful to both the environment and human health. One statistic from the US Environmental Protection Agency claims that a petrol-powered lawn mower operating for an hour gives off as many VOCs as eight cars doing 55mph for the same length of time.

Family Tree Gardens operates across Essex, working on a wide range of jobs including garden design, estate maintenance, lawn care and turfing. The Nolans have always taken a keen interest in the environment, and FT Gardens aims to be a carbon-neutral business.

Thomas and James gardened with their parents, and were previously employed at a botanical garden. Working alongside the brothers are two part-time and two full-time staff members.
