Plant Sale shows signs of hope blooming
On Saturday 22nd May the gardens of Haslemere Museum were bursting with blooms and animated chatter. A positive attitude had ensured that the Plant Sale that had had to be cancelled last year due to Covid, went ahead as planned on the first weekend since the Museum re-opened.
The team of volunteers pulled off another successful fundraising Plant Sale despite the varied weather and restrictions imposed by Covid-19. It was held outside rather than in the lecture hall as in past years, and the restrictions on numbers meant vigilance on the part of the organisers and lots of directional arrows and signposting on site to ensure a clear flow of traffic.
Visitors were able to buy houseplants, vegetables, perennials and wild flowers, all of which have been grown locally by volunteers and friends of the Museum. The variety was laudible and the enthusiasm of shoppers wasn’t dampened by the showers and blustery winds.
Trustee and lead organiser Jane Clayton said “We were so delighted to be able to go ahead with the Plant Sale this weekend, it is a staple event in many residents’ calendars and we were so disappointed that 2020’s sale couldn’t take place. It is a great opportunity for people to buy great value plants to enhance their local gardens and it really felt like things were beginning to have some sense of normality, hearing people chatting and enjoying themselves in the Museum gardens. Thanks to our wonderful team of volunteers at Haslemere Educational Museum, this year’s annual Plant Sale, was our most successful yet. This was despite some members of the team having to brave gale force winds and rain on Friday, to set up the event. After our long lock-down, we were very pleased to see so many eager customers, and we hope their plants grow well and that their gardens look beautiful this summer.”
The funds raised are vital to the Museum, which has had to close three times in the last 15 months and has felt the impact of those closures. As an independent charity, Haslemere Educational Museum is entirely dependant onearned income such as admission donations, grants and membership to fund its varied programme of events, exhibitions, talks, conservation, preservation and education.
