Emily Powell: The Fundamental Importance of Nature
10 JUNE – 1ST JULY 2023
Sarah Wiseman Gallery
Sarah Wiseman Gallery is thrilled to present the work of emerging artist Emily Powell. Described as ‘one of the most important emerging artists in the UK today’, Emily’s work is distinctive by its unbridled expression and vivid colour.
In this exhilarating new solo exhibition, Emily Powell will present a new collection of works inspired by nature and her recent animal narrative work. Sarah Wiseman Gallery began working with Emily towards the end of 2022, displaying a collection of works inspired by wintry Cotswolds scenes.
‘Emily is an artist that is hugely committed to her practice. Her background in sculpture and sabbatical at the Ecole Régionale des Beaux-Arts de Rouen has given her a firm grounding as a painter with serious ambition. However, there is something rebellious in her spirit. She is an experimental artist and is unafraid to break the rules.’
Emily has recently completed a residency at Dartington Trust, a charity supporting the arts, ecology, and social justice in the heart of the Devon countryside. Emily felt deeply inspired by the landscape there, remarking; ‘We all need comfort, whatever age we are. Let the trees look after you a while, just stop and trust the honest nature that surrounds you… You have done so well and come so far. Run free, let go of the pain and embrace all the golden glow you find in watching the birds and hearing their song.’
'Nature is a place to reset. It's the place you're meant to be, it's there for you whatever your emotions. There are so many good shapes and shades to record. It's the sort of good that lights up your whole being and looks after you.'
Emily Powell is one of the UK’s most exciting young artistic talents. Her body of work illustrates nostalgia and freewill. She brightly captures hometown coastal views in Devon, motherhood, still life & nature in her own light – from parrots in the shower, tigers in the sky, seagulls with a political agenda, flamboyant floral arrangements, boats at sea in battleship form. Her imagination is endless, her curiosity infectious, freely exploring paintings, drawings, collages, sculptures, digital art, stop motion animations and more. The lively diversity behind Emily’s work is rightfully admired. Her fluorescent colour palette and fearless technique showcases liberty in the way she creates and exhibits. No surface, medium or space is impractical to her. By removing traditional boundaries in her work, Emily is proving herself to be a breath of fresh air to the art world.
Sarah Wiseman Gallery is preparing a fully illustrated e-catalogue, where you can preview all works and read texts about the artist. Please contact us at info@wisegal.com to request a link.
