Merry and Bright: Sarah Wiseman Gallery's Christmas Exhibition
Merry and Bright!
Christmas at Sarah Wiseman Gallery
19th November – 7th January 2023
This festive season Sarah Wiseman gallery is excited to reveal ‘Merry and Bright’; a show featuring bursts of zinging colour! ‘The annual Christmas show is something we always look forward to at the gallery,’ says gallery director Sarah Wiseman. ‘We’re focusing on colour this year, to really make the walls sing.’
We’re delighted to introduce works by the acclaimed artist Emily Powell. Emily’s joyful works are an exuberant, explosive expression of freedom and colour. She explores several subjects, from the beautiful Devon coastline where she lives and works, to pattern, animals or surreal still life.
As well has exhibiting her work to critical acclaim, her recent projects include painting doors of Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital, collaborations with MoMA and British Museum, and was part of the 2020 BBC Documentary for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition Show. She has also recently published her first book, written with her sister Dr Sarah Moore; ‘Start Painting Now’.
Other highlights of ‘Merry and Bright’ include new works by Jim Whitty, renowned for his other worldly, contemporary take on British landscape; Fletcher Prentice, with striking flower-scapes inspired by his garden; there’s also printmaking by Anna Marrow, who specialises in brightly coloured silkscreen prints inspired by pop culture. ‘We’re also delighted to display ceramics by Oxfordshire based makers Katie Coston of Illyria Pottery and the mid-century modern style tableware from Kate Garwood,’ says Sarah.
‘This year, all works will also be available to view and purchase in our online shop, to make it as easy as possible for our customers,’ says Sarah. ‘We can ship anywhere in the world, and even offer gift wrap, if you need it.’
‘We’ll alert our email subscribers as soon as everything goes live, so the best way to stay in the loop is to sign up to our mailing list.’
In November: Lindsey Moran’s new Oxford Prints.
Before our Christmas exhibition, we’ll be showcasing new photo-polymer etchings by Liverpool-based artist Lindsey Moran.
Lindsey participated in a recent group show here at Sarah Wiseman Gallery, ‘Inner Space’ and whilst visiting the gallery in Oxford, she fell in love with the city’s architecture, and has created some stunning new work inspired by the ‘Dreaming Spires’.
Lindsey Moran specialises in exploring the relationship between printmaking and photography. Carrying her camera everywhere she goes, she is drawn to exploring the influence of light on both natural and man-made environments, with her black and white photographs forming the basis of her printmaking.
Her new collection includes striking new images of Oxford’s Museum of Natural History; Lindsey has perfectly captured the softly lit Victorian Gothic interior, interspersed with the skeletons of wild and prehistoric creatures.
