53% Increase in NHS Patient Hydration for less than 32p a day

The Northern Care Alliance NHS Group recently conducted a hydration study utilising Stix Drinks innovative sachets to review whether they encouraged patients to drink more fluid and therefore having positive impacts on the NHS.

Squash Stix (Squash) and Vit Stix (Vitamins) are individual liquid portions of drinks, that simply mix with water to make a refreshing drinks. Patients were given 4 sachets and a cup alongside a jug of water and their daily water intake was monitored.

Significant increases in . hydration were noted as a result of patients being able to make their own drinks at a time convenient to them. The study also found a reduction in UTI's and associated sepsis, reduced length of stay for patients, reduced infection risk due to single portions and the increase in hydration linked to reduced patient frailty.

As nurses reduced time making drinks for patients, they had additional time to focus on other elements of care. Patients felt that they were not disturbing nurses and that the product was easy to open and made water more enjoyable.

Stix Drinks 'Chief Hydrator', Tom Anderson-Dixon, commented "I've very pleased to see that our products are able to improve patient wellbeing and care. With 60-70% of the human body being made from water, it's important that we keep it topped up, and Stix Drinks aim to keep people in and out of hospital hydrated with drinks that deliver additional benefits such as vitamins".

With the cost of NHS Hospital Bed days estimated to be in the region of £400+ a day* and UTI's ranging between £1000-1500** in cost, any products to help reduce this figure, saving the NHS money is welcomed.

Stix Drinks are now working with both Bidfood and NHS Supply Chain to share this information amongst NHS Trusts, encouraging caterers and nursing staff to try the products and boost patient hydration and wellbeing.

About Stix Drinks

Squash Stix was the first product launched by Tom Anderson-Dixon. Whilst on a placement year from UWE Bristol with Marks & Spencer, Tom noticed staff members bringing in bottles of squash and taking them to the water cooler. Making a coffee with a jigger pot of milk he commented “we should put squash into these single portions to prevent people bringing in bottles” and alas, an idea was born. Squash Stix are now supplied into hospitals for patients, hotel bedrooms as an alternative to tea and coffee, airlines and offices at across the UK for employee hydration. The addition of Vit Stix has grown the business into the retail sector. Vit Stix are packed with Vitamins B5/B6/B12, C, D and Zinc to naturally boost energy and immunity. They are 99% less plastic than bottled vitamin waters. At 7 years old, the business is growing from strength to strength, and hopes to grow the range across multiple drinks.
