Indian street food brand marks World Food Day

Wednesday October 16th marked World Food Day, with many businesses and producers hosting events or encouraging customers to try something new.

Among those celebrating World Food Day was London-based Indian street food chain, PILAU, whose owner believes that the day marks a great opportunity for diners in the capital to sample a real taste of India.

Pilau serves authentic Indian street food which can be eaten in-house or on the go. Their contemporary menu features rice and salad bowls as well as wraps, showcasing experimental Indian recipes cooked using traditional methods.

Speaking following World Food Day, PILAU owner George Pitkeathley said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for people to try something new. We’ve felt that there are some unhelpful myths surrounding Indian cuisine, and they’ve prevented many customers trying or enjoying good Indian cooking. World Food Day and the weeks after it offer an opportunity to debunk those myths and show people just how incredible, vibrant and diverse real Indian street food is.

“We’ve designed a menu which takes traditional recipes and cooking methods but gives them our own unique twist. This is modern Indian food at its best, taking fresh, simple ingredients and showing how we can transform them into incredible dishes which are packed full of Indian flavour. We’re hoping to see plenty of new faces in the weeks following World Food Day, as people come out to celebrate international cuisine.”

World Food Day was set up as part of the worldwide campaign against hunger, but also to promote healthier diets all round. Events took place right across the UK, with many restaurants such as Pilau encouraging diners to be more experimental in their food choices.
