“World Hunger Day should make us all think about those less fortunate, all year round” says Indian street food company

Indian street food company Pilau has pledged its mission to feed 1 billion hungry children in India as part of the ‘Feed Yourself - Feed A Child’ campaign.

Every time that a customer eats at one of Pilau’s restaurant’s, the company will donate a meal to an Indian child in need.

To mark this year’s World Hunger Day, taking place today, the Pilau team have been working hard to entice as many customers through its doors as possible, therefore feeding as many children as they can.

This year’s World Hunger Day, which was set up by a charity called The Hunger Project - focuses on the theme of ‘sustainability’. Indeed, the awareness campaign has been designed to address the ways in which hunger is linked to other issues such as social justice, gender inequalities, climate change, and access to work opportunities.

George Pitkeatley, the owner of Pilau, explained: “As a company, we are deeply concerned about issues The Hunger Project is working so hard to address. As well as being passionate about Indian street food and its traditions, we feel connected to the country and want to do everything in our power to tackle issues surrounding food poverty in the region.

“Thanks to our partnership with the non-profit Akshaya Patra Foundation, which feeds around 1.8 million children each day, we have been able to do our bit to help give young people nourishment and better chances in life. Although we have already fed thousands of children, we are only just getting started and have our sights set on 1 billion!”

By focusing on tackling food poverty in this way, it is hoped that the campaign will also tackle other issues highlighted by World Hunger Day such as sustainable practices and problems surrounding social inequalities.
