Scottow sculptor offers the chance to go potty!

Potter Richard Wilks is offering artists local to his base in Scottow, near Norwich, the chance to learn more about working with clay by taking one of a range of courses that he offers.

Private tuition and residential options are available, alongside a number of pottery and sculpture courses.

Richard has been running the classes for two and a half years, and previously worked for the BBC on Dr Who, as well as on other sets. He has also worked in the props team at London’s National Theatre.

His classes have the benefit of being small, and there are rarely more than six students. Artists who attend are made up of both regulars and those who come to taster sessions, mainly held at the weekends.

Tasters, costing £30, including firing and glazing and the price of materials, offer the chance to try out working in clay before committing to a ceramics or sculpture course. Hand building, throwing on the wheel and modelling are all introduced.

Students at these sessions create three pieces, two built by hand and one thrown on the potter’s wheel.

During holidays and Saturday afternoons, Richard also offers parent and child taster sessions.

He says: “While making art is pretty complex, and you need to be a genius to fashion a masterpiece, everyone has the ability to create something wonderful. I offer the tools, tuition and studio space so that people can come here and be inspired as they develop their craft.”
